Pharmacokinetics and dosing
No studies with a clinically relevant sex analysis regarding the pharmacokinetics or dosing of zanamivir have been found.
Effects
In a secondary analysis [1] of a community-based randomized, placebo-controlled trial assessing the efficacy of neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir and/or zanamivir) on seasonal influenza [2], the clinical and virological responses (self-administered questionnaire and nasal swab) were assessed in patients with oseltamivir (73 men, 68 women) or zanamivir (77 men, 72 women) monotherapy [1]. For zanamivir, clinical response and virological response were not associated with a patient’s sex [1].
Adverse effects
Published controlled studies on differences between men and women in zanamivir safety are lacking.
Reproductive health issues
Regarding teratogenic aspects, please consult Janusmed Drugs and Birth Defects (in Swedish, Janusmed fosterpåverkan).
